What Is the Best Dance Class for a 4-Year-Old?

Share

If your 4-year-old dances around the living room whenever music comes on, you may be wondering whether they're ready for dance lessons—and what kind of class is best at this age. For most 4-year-olds, Creative Dance is an excellent place to start. At four, children don't need to choose between becoming a ballet dancer, hip-hop dancer, jazz dancer, or anything else. A good preschool dance class gives them something more important first: a chance to discover how their bodies move, respond to music, use their imaginations, and enjoy dancing with other children. WHY DOES CREATIVE DANCE WORK SO WELL FOR 4-YEAR-OLDS? Four-year-olds learn differently from older children. Asking them to spend an entire class concentrating on formal dance technique isn't necessarily the best introduction to dance. Creative Dance uses movement, music, imagination, and age-appropriate instruction to introduce fundamental dance concepts while keeping children actively involved. At American Dance Institute, Preschool Creative Dance is designed for ages 3.5–5. Children explore body awareness, balance and coordination, strength and flexibility, directions and levels in space, pathways and traveling, rhythm and musicality, different movement qualities, and creative expression. DOES MY 4-YEAR-OLD NEED TO START WITH BALLET? No. Ballet can be wonderful, but children don't need to specialize this early. Creative Dance provides a broad foundation in body awareness, coordination, musicality, listening skills, and movement vocabulary that can help prepare a child for ballet, jazz, hip hop, flamenco, modern—or whatever they eventually discover they love. DANCE CLASS IS ABOUT MORE THAN LEARNING STEPS Dance class at four is also about much more than learning steps. Children practice listening, following directions, taking turns, moving safely, participating in a group, remembering sequences, expressing ideas physically, trying unfamiliar things, and developing confidence and independence. ADI's Preschool Creative Dance classes are 45 minutes once a week—designed specifically for preschoolers rather than simply being shortened versions of classes for older children. WHAT IF MY CHILD ISN'T READY TO TAKE CLASS WITHOUT ME? Age alone doesn't determine readiness. ADI also offers Mommy/Daddy & Me Toddler Dance for ages 2.5–4, where a parent, grandparent, nanny, or other caregiver participates with the child. Parents can observe ADI classes from viewing areas, so you can see how your child responds to the teacher, the other children, and the class environment. SO, WHAT'S THE BEST PLACE TO BEGIN? For most 4-year-olds, the best place to begin is simple: move, imagine, listen, experiment, make friends, and discover whether dancing makes them happy. Technique and specialization can come later. At four, a love of movement is a great place to start. ADI offers free trial classes so your child can experience the teacher, class, and other children before you make a commitment. Preschool Creative Dance is available at our Greenwood, Magnolia, Wedgwood, and Shoreline locations.
